WindTag is a novel, industry-first innovation from Tagmarshal that maps what is often called ‘the invisible hazard’ – the wind.
Finally, players can stop wondering what the wind is doing while tossing grass into the air, or checking a distant flag and trees for movement. Using WindTag, players have instant access to accurate wind intelligence and yardage that will help them make more birdies!
As the market leader in on-course optimization and developing future-focused tech solutions for the golf industry, Tagmarshal’s WindTag product ushers in a completely new way of using live data for improved club selection and shot strategy.
Here are 6 ways this forward-thinking technology is changing the game for players, operators and ranges.
Weather conditions are hyperlocal, but many systems relay wind and other metrics from distant weather instruments. These conditions are also constantly changing and the information players receive is very often inaccurate.
Rather than showing you conditions from a beacon at the nearest airport, for example, WindTag measures the exact wind conditions (speed and direction) in real-time at each pin on the course.
Data is gathered and transmitted once per second, with wind speeds measured in miles per hour. The direction of the wind is broken down into 8 golf directions – helping, hurting, left to right, helping from the left, and so on.
The WindTag data is displayed on Tagmarshal’s Caddie app or 2Way screen devices, as well as all available screens for tee boxes and yardage markers, helping players with wind-adjusted distances and shot planning and enhancing their experience.
The technology also provides real-time shot recommendations that take into consideration how wind impacts distance, club selection, shot trajectory, and target.
Aided by these extra insights, players will reduce the amount of time they spend planning a shot and increase their accuracy, lowering scores (in theory, at least!) and improving course pace and flow.
Updating pin locations daily is a labor-intensive process, no matter how large or small the golf operation.
Rather than having to manually record and update this each day, which means tweaking distances on the system and printing out hole location sheets for each playing group, WindTag feeds the daily pin locations directly into Tagmarshal’s system.
As soon as a new hole is cut and the flag is placed back in position, multi-satellite, hyper-accurate locations are automatically logged. In addition, all tee box and fairway distance markers are also automatically updated.
There is no need for an on-site visit by expert technicians to get WindTag up and running!
Courses can complete the setup themselves, screwing the small, ultrasonic wind meters to the top of each flagstick. Additionally, there are no cellular, Bluetooth or WiFi requirements to consider.
The transducers are solar-powered, rugged and waterproof so they can withstand adverse weather conditions. Courses can essentially set WindTag up once and forget about it for the rest of the season!
In tournament play, where rules may stipulate that you cannot use technology that measures wind speed, WindTag can easily be disabled.
WindTag is ideal for driving ranges, giving players at each bay the precise distance to each pin, as well as shot recommendations based on the pin they’re hitting to.
Players benefit from being able to practice hitting in the wind and can fine-tune their distance control.
With so many off-course players familiar with the likes of Topgolf, where technology is central to the experience, WindTag’s technology is another welcome addition to range players.
All of the data gathered by WindTag is fed into Tagmarshal’s powerful system, further enhancing the AI and machine-learning capabilities. Now operators can view data and spot trends related to wind conditions, such as how pace of play is affected, and use this to optimize going forward.
The predictive power of Tagmarshal’s algorithms, which draw on more than 10 dynamically calculated factors to predict outcomes and aid smarter decision-making, is also being fed by seamless integrations with many other leading technology solutions.
This brings exponential value to course partners by combining data insights from multiple sources in ways that help unlock new opportunities.
The industry buzz around WindTag, which was first shown to operators at the 2025 PGA Show, continues to grow.
For years, the industry has been wondering whether there was a simple yet effective way to measure the wind and instantly get this information to players. Ben Holbrook, Tagmarshal’s Chief Innovation Officer, first figured out how to gather the data before addressing the player aspect.
He says, “Imagine, just like slope for distance, we pioneer slope for wind. Now, via the Tagmarshal platform, we can articulate: ‘The pin is 157 yards with an 11-mph hurting wind; consider more club with a lower trajectory.’”
